Scholarships and bursaries awarded for 2011

We are happy to announce several scholarships awarded to students of the OCHS. These scholarships provide an opportunity for students to travel and pursue their research and they make a big difference to their morale and material needs.
The scholarships awarded are as follows.
The Pandit Abaji Scholarship sponsored by Raj and Ramila Chauhan, the founders of the Leicester Friends Group, was awarded to Meijia Ling. Meijia is studying India's scientific and medical traditions.
The Jiva Goswami Scholarship sponsored by Dr Ravi Gupta, an alumnus of the Centre, was awarded to Gopal Gupta who is completing his D.Phil. on concepts of maya (illusion) in Hinduism.
The Gupta Dan Bursary, sponsored anonymously, is awarded to Ka-Kin Cheuk. Ka-Kin is researching Indian textile traders in East Asia -- a unique and little-researched part of the diaspora.
The Ramlal and Ambalal I Patel Bursaries sponsored by Pyarelal Patel in honour of his parents, were awarded to Lucian Wong and Yi Zhu. Lucian is studying the life and works of the 19th century reformer, Bhaktivinod Thakur while Yi is working on a Sanskrit textbook in Chinese.
The Patel Book Grant, awarded anonymously, is awarded to Sitara Thobani and the Prof. Makhan Lal Roy Chowdhury Book Prize is awarded to Anton Zykov.
The prizes sponsored by Mrs Bhartiben Bhanubhai Patel are awarded to Paul Gerstmayr and Richard Williams. Richard is studying Braj-Bhasha poetry and Paul is working towards a Sanskrit degree.
The Hansraj and Kanchanben Popat Bursary sponsored by Jayesh Popat, a longstanding supporter of the OCHS, in honour of his parents was awarded to Corin Golding. Corin is studying the Marchas of Mana valley, a community of semi-nomadic former traders, and their historical relationship to Badrinath Temple.
The Damji Devji Pattni Scholarship, sponsored by Ramesh Pattni, also a student at the Centre, is awarded to Hrvoje Cargonja.
The Ford Bursary sponsored by Alfred and Sharmila Ford is awarded to Tristan Elby. Tristan is researching the vratyas, an ascetic group described in the Vedas.
The OCHS warmly thanks those who have kindly sponsored these scholarships and congratulates the recipients. These gifts go a long way towards ensuring the continuation of Hindu studies at Oxford.
